SEATTLE LGBT VISITORS CENTER OPENS FRIDAY
City’s LGBT community opens its arms to leisure travelers, newlyweds and
convention groups, underscoring Seattle’s reputation as a premier LGBT destination

SEATTLE – Thursday night the Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) will unveil its new Seattle LGBT Visitors Center on Capitol Hill to a select group of Tourism industry professionals. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) visitor center, is Seattle’s first and one of just two such visitor centers in the U.S. The Center will open to the public on Friday, July 19.

The visitors center is hosted by 1st  Security Bank different and is a project of the GSBA. The 200-square-foot visitors center features a street-side space located at the bank’s 614 Broadway E branch. The center is staffed part time and offers a wide array of Seattle visitor information and services including brochures, visitor guides, maps, a 60” TV screen with scrolling information and access to www.travelgayseattle.com, the GSBA web travel portal.

Travel and tourism industry presenting partners include 1st Security Bank different and Visit Seattle, which has maintained an LGBT tourism marketing partnership with the GSBA since 2009. Travel and tourism sponsors include the Sheraton Seattle Hotel, Sound Transit, Amtrak and OutCity magazine.

“Seattle's vibrant, progressive and welcoming community is the perfect home for this unique resource for the LGBT traveler,” said Louise Chernin, Executive Director of the GSBA. “Open to all, The Seattle LGBT Visitors Center will be a great destination for all travelers to find hotels, exciting nightlife spots, fabulous food, entertainment, shopping and attractions - and the LGBT traveler will know that each business found inside the visitors center is friendly, supportive and gladly welcomes the LGBT traveler.”

“As a local bank, we are deeply committed to the communities we serve.  What better way to support Capitol Hill’s vibrant neighborhood than to host GSBA’s ‘Seattle LGBT Visitors Center.’  We thank Louise and the GSBA for this amazing opportunity,” said Joe Adams, CEO of 1st Security Bank.”

LGBT travelers comprise approximately 10 percent of the consumer travel market share in the U.S. and, on average, have higher disposable incomes than members of other niche travel markets. The estimated annual economic impact of LGBT travelers is $70 billion (source: Community Marketing, Inc.). The GSBA and its travel industry partners continue to work together to position Seattle as a top destination for these travelers, and help create new sources of revenue for Seattle and the Puget Sound region. “The LGBT community already plays a vital role in the economy and vitality of the Puget Sound region,” said Chernin “and now with marriage equality, we now have an even greater opportunity to harness the economic impact of the LGBT traveler.”  In just the first 4 months that legal same-sex marriages were performed in WA State, 14 % were for out-of-state couples. (source: WA State Dept. of Health)

“We’re proud to support the GSBA with this new venture during an important time for LGBT civil liberties,” said Tom Norwalk, President & CEO of Visit Seattle. “Our city has always been known as a progressive, welcoming destination that promotes LGBT civil rights and equality for all, and now Washington State has joined in extending marriage equality. Extending a warm welcome is the right thing to do, but we also hope it encourages more LGBT tourism dollars which, in turn, strengthen our local and state economies.”

GSBA Welcomes New Board Members Kim Bogucki & Robin Larmer

GSBA welcomes Kim Bogucki and Robin Larmer to our Board of Directors!

Robin Larmer is the Principal of RLL Consulting & Advocacy, an organization that provides strategic, public policy and regulatory support to health care organizations and employers as they navigate the highly regulated and increasingly complex health care system.  In addition, she serves as corporate counsel to health plans and other health care organizations, and earlier in her career, she was an Assistant General Counsel for the Illinois Department of Human Services.  She has also worked as a health care and litigation attorney in private practice and a lobbyist. She received her BA and MS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her JD from the University of Minnesota Law School.

She discovered the GSBA 5 years ago, when she was new to Seattle and looking for a way to connect with and contribute to the LGBTA community.  Following her passion for education, she quickly became a volunteer with the GSBA Scholarship program.  She strongly believes that the financial and personal support we provide our youth today will pay countless dividends in the future.  She is proud to have been asked to serve on the Board of the GSBA, and looks forward to many more years of involvement with this tremendous organization.

Kim Bogucki has been a member of the Seattle Police force for over 24 years and currently serves as the department’s LGBTQ liaison officer.  Kim has implemented programs for youth, the incarcerated and the homeless, promoting these unique voices into driving positive change.  She has received national recognition for her efforts including The Doughnut Dialogues -- a national model that successfully brings together youth and police One of the most powerful projects Kim has created is the If Project, where women inmates answer the question, “If there was something someone could have said or done that would have changed the path that led you here, what would it have been?”  Over 500 inmates have participated in the If Project, leading Kim to produce a video, start an interactive website and prepare presentations to reach and educate both youth and adults. Kim was the recipient of the 2010 GSBA Community Leader of the Year Award.

Prior to beginning her own business in 2004, she held a Catering & Sales Manager position with Columbia Hospitality, where she got her start focusing on weddings and parties. She believes that every individual has a special story, and that story should always be reflected in the event that is being celebrated. Creating that personal reflection through celebration is the most gratifying part of her job.

Jenny joined GSBA in 2007 and occasionally attended GSBA events beginning in 2002. For her, GSBA was a support system that offered inspiration and strength. She could be out and proud in the community as a successful professional lesbian business owner and mother, and as she says, “it was okay to be ME!”  As her involvement with and commitment to the GSBA has grown, strong business relationships have been established and she has had the pleasure of working for many of our very own members on their personal or professional celebrations.

Jenny and her partner, Lindsay, have been together for 3.5 years. She has two AMAZING boys, Jayden (13) and Justin (11), who are her “game changers”. She believes the future is strong and will do everything in her power to continue to work for the GSBA, its future leaders through the scholarship fund, and all our membership.

Professionally, David is a Financial Services Professional with New York Life and NY Life Securities. In his role he provides insurance and financial strategies for both long-term as well as more short-term needs. Protecting one's human capital or one's ability to continue to earn and save is one major area of his work. He has been with New York Life since 2004. Previously he worked with Premera Blue Cross for 16 years as an Account Executive, working primarily with school districts, as well as state and federal employees. He has a BA in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences from the University of Washington. She helps all types of businesses and individuals, especially those in the LGBT community, to find the perfect coverage at an affordable price. Dena also works with them on providing risk management so that buying insurance is not the only way they can protect their homes and/or businesses.

Dena has been active in the Seattle community for 20 years. Some of her past community involvement includes chairing the West Seattle YMCA Partners with Youth campaign, being a board member of City Year Seattle and providing time (and money) for other non-profits such as Westside Baby, Birthday Dreams and Building Changes. She has been a member of the GSBA for more than 8 years and has been active in the GSBA Scholarship Fund, serving as an interviewer and a team leader the past four years.

As a board member, she aims to bring enthusiasm, wisdom and laughter to the GSBA.

Their nationwide portfolio includes clients ranging from state legislators to congressional, senate, and presidential candidates, as well as federal and state political action committees.

Jay has been a proud member of the GSBA since 2010 and serves on the Public Policy Task Force. As a new board member, he looks forward to helping GSBA and its members play a leading role in shaping policies that affect our community.

In addition to his work with GSBA, he is the Vice President of the Board for the Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP), an organization that brings together communities, educators and health professionals to reduce the rate of suicide and bullying in Washington State. A graduate of Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, he relocated to Seattle four years ago with his husband, Michael. When not working, they enjoy spending time walking the Green Lake community with their dogs Petey and Grover.

Gordon Prouty
Gordon joined the Puget Sound Business Journal as Publisher and President in July of 2011. Prior to that, he served as the Advertising Director for three years at the San Francisco Business Times. His background before joining American City Business Journals has been primarily on the advertising sales and business development side of the media business, holding key management positions in Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco before making his way up to Seattle. He started his career back in his hometown of Syracuse, New York after graduating from Syracuse University, where he spent number of years with The Syracuse Newspapers and serving as an Adjunct Instructor at his alma mater.

A GSBA member since 2009, Paul and his domestic partner Curtis Bigelow are the owners of The Lobby Bar, which was the 2010 GSBA New Business of the Year. Paul has served on the GSBA Business and Humanitarian Awards committee for the last two years and is constantly humbled by the outstanding achievements and philanthropy of GSBA members.

GSBA Member Spotlight - Morgan Henry LMP, Anchor Body Works

by Joshua Michael Rumley, Event & Office Coordinator

Anchor Body Works

The daily grind of life has a way of wearing down our delicate bodies. Instead of reaching for another dab of Icy Hot and smelling like your great aunt why not indulge in a full body massage? The Greater Seattle Business Association would like to welcome Morgan Henry LMP, the founder of Anchor Body Works, to the GSBA family.

Anchor Bodyworks is conveniently located on the corner of 12th Avenue and Pike Street on Capitol Hill, a short walk or bus ride from downtown Seattle. Henry specializes in a wide variety of different massage techniques including deep tissue, scar tissue release, relaxation, injury, prenatal & postpartum and myofascial release.

Recently I took advantage of the GSBA ShopOUT.org special for Anchor Bodyworks; a 60 minute full body massage and a 30 minute scalp massage for only $55! It was a great deal and the most relaxing 90 minutes I've experienced in recent memory. I can still smell the inviting aroma of eucalyptus and lavender; my massage oils of choice.

Henry has a popular massage chair service that she takes to local offices, events and businesses. Henry and her massage chair were recently seen at the July GSBA Women on Top mixer at the Seattle Marriott Waterfront providing massages to event attendees.

Anchor Bodyworks currently offers massages at $60.00 for a 60 minutes & $90.00 for 90 minutes. Anchor Bodyworks is home to the "What Can You Pay or Trade Day" which is the last Friday every month.

For more information about Anchor Bodyworks services and rates please contact Morgan Henry at morgan.henry305@gmail.com.

Perspective by Louise: Paid Sick Leave, the right thing to do but can small businesses afford it?

2

Many of you are aware that the City of Seattle is considering an ordinance on Paid Sick Leave. This Ordinance will affect all GSBA members, whether you are a business owner or an employee. GSBA has members in favor of as well as opposed to this issue. GSBA has been actively engaged in discussions on this policy and have tried to represent your concerns. Whatever your position, I encourage you to base your decision on accurate information by attending a free, educational forum on this issue on Tuesday, July 26 from 5:30-7:00pm. The Forum is sponsored by the Greater Seattle Chamber, co-sponsored by GSBA and many of our friends from the other neighborhood Chamber and Business Associations (both opponents and supporters).

The recent results of the GSBA member survey on Paid Sick Leave showed members were split on the issue, with more members opposed. However, your comments showed strong support for employees being able to stay home if they are sick, and without the fear of losing their job. In addition, many of you reported you already offer paid health insurance, paid sick leave, paid time off or shift changes so employees avoid losing income. Many of you added comments that you believed paid sick leave is "the right thing to do" but, were worried about keeping your doors open in a still struggling economy.

Without a clear mandate from our membership, GSBA will not take a position advocating either for or against the policy. As a result of the feedback from GSBA and other business leaders, the proposed ordinance has already been significantly modified to address the concerns of small businesses. We understand there are still other concerns, which is why we encourage you to register for this Paid Sick leave seminar. Space is limited, so per-registration is required.

Your success is our business,

Louise
